Since attending the Duct Tape Marketing Gathering over a month ago, I’ve been carrying around Steven Pressfield’s Do The Work.
The book came in a bag of goodies that was left in each Duct Tape Marketing Consultant’s hotel room. I had never heard of it before. The name Steven Pressfield did not ring a bell. Examining the book, I discovered Pressfield has written both fiction and nonfiction – he is the author of The Legend of Bagger Vance.
Do The Work! is a very easy read, deceptively easy. Pressfield has hit on the long dark night of the soul for entrepreneurial business owners. As I read, I kept thinking, yep, that’s kept me up at night or wow! I really wrestled with that.
He identifies “resistance” as the great enemy of anyone who “…rejects immediate gratification in favor of long-term growth, health, or integrity.” His book equips the reader to understand and combat resistance in all its many forms.
This is a slim volume with large fonts – which, as I mentioned before, gives the impression of business-book-junk-food read – it is anything but.
“The last thing we want is to remain who we are.” A sample of Pressfield’s short simple sentences worthy of hours of thought.
What you’ll notice right away is that Pressfield is not repackaging hackneyed “The Me I See is the Me I’ll Be” type encouragement. There is a grittiness and starkness to Pressfield’s writing. But it is a welcome flavor of encouragement, for as Pressfield points out, we don’t want to be Hamlet.
